Yes, I got it to work after much thinking and trying all possible things
that came to mind. So it is great to see that the documentation now
gives a pretty good picture of what you need to do :-)
I've looked at the example you provided. I think the typo will be
obvious to anyone reading it, but just FYI:
variables.source.1=daisy:100-DSY
variables.source.2=daisy=101-DSY >> should be
variables.source.2=daisy:101-DSY

Never mind. You are correct, the documentation should be clearer.
In my case, I was adding the properties as publication properties, not
to the Book metadata.
I'll go update the documentation now.
