I had this in the past as well (with inkscape pngs), could solve it by opening in The Gimp , apply Image | Flatten Image and then save.
Since these png's obviously have only one layer I don't really understand how the 'flattening' could make the difference it did...

Anyway , I applied this trick to the mentioned images and started the reproduction of the 2.1 book to check if it solves the issue.
The new book in production has this instance name: daisy_docs_book--20070924-073850
