If there were a way to query the status of a backup lock in the repository from within the skin, I could suppress the generation of the "Edit" link as well as the "New Document" link in the menus. In addition, I could display a message somewhere saying that the database is currently undergoing a backup. This most likely would be an extra isLocked="true" boolean attribute somewhere in the xml that is sent to the layout.xsl skin.
