Excellent! I read the MySQL docs a little before I got your message, and I
think your technique is probably simplest--changing the setting server-wide
seems to necessitate restarting the MySQL daemon and stuff.
I did find that the data truncation errors popped up in the wiki as well
when trying to save changes to files, but updating the character encoding
fixed that as well. I'd suspect that the fix is applicable to any place this
error pops up.
