[daisy] Best way to customize global layout

Hi,

I'm new to Daisy and would like add some additional site global  
things in the header at the top of each page, and some static text in  
a colophon at the bottom. I've looked at the layout.xsl. I would like  
to add some additional links inside the <div id="header"> for things  
like "contact us", "careers", and "about us". Aside from actually  
editing the primary layout.xsl, how would i carry this out? What is  
the best practice here?
