Supporting attachments hasn't been considered since it wouldn't be
possible to include attachments in PDF-books anyhow.

It would be possible (starting from 1.5-M2) to include them if they were
linked in the book definition or included in a document (not by a normal
link). Then it would still require some customisation to the book
publication type to have it actually work.
